Working with MA director Caroline Yu, this design explores a contemporary, feminist reading of Shakespeare’s final play, reassessing the power structure Prospero sets out and examining the significance of perception within the text. The final design is centered on Ariel’s ability to direct the perceptions of both the other characters and the audience by controlling what can and cannot be seen. The choice of the Carne Studio over LAMDA’s larger venue brings an intimacy to what is a relatively small piece, doing away with Prospero’s theatricality to welcome the audience to Ariel’s island.
